Morris, Desmond

   Anthropologist
   Morris started as a zoologist at Birmingham and became an anthropologist at the University of Oxford. He examined interactional synchrony (people in a group moving in unison with, for example, a speaker) and postural congruence (adopting identical or mirror-image positions) He drew on his research into animal behaviour to produce a sociological critique of human behaviour, promulgated in his best-known work The Naked Ape (1967). His work, which includes The Human Zoo (1969), Manwatching (1977), The Soccer Tribe (1981), Catwatching and Dogwatching (both 1986), packages and popularizes science (he was head of Granada Television’s Film Unit at London Zoo from 1956–9) and thus paved the way for books like Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time.
